Iroquois Nursing
Career Pathway Program
Iroquois, one of Central New York’s premiere comprehensive health care
facilities announces a new “earn as you learn” program for individuals
interested in pursuing a career in nursing.
Built in 1992 by Crouse, Community and St. Joseph’s Hospitals, Iroquois serves
patients that are in need of skilled nursing and sub-acute rehabilitation.
Iroquois is conveniently located just minutes from Rts. 81 and 481, in a
residential neighborhood near Jamesville.
Iroquois’s Nursing Career pathway program begins with the individual who
demonstrates an interest in pursuing a career in nursing enrolling into our
“Service Aide” program. This “on-the-job” training program will provide
orientation to all aspects of the health care environment. (For high school
students the program can be tailored to the student’s class schedule.)
Once the service aide has demonstrated positive attitude toward the health care
environment, has demonstrated good work habits, they will be enrolled in the
next Certified Nursing Assistant class held here at Iroquois. Classes are
scheduled at least quarterly if not more often. (High school diploma or GED are
required).
If an individual has already completed a CNA program and has received their
certification they can apply to Iroquois and follow the pathway outlined. The
CNA may be eligible for tuition reimbursement for qualified programs.
After successfully completing 6 months of service to Iroquois, Certified Nursing
Assistants who demonstrate excellent work habits, problem solving skills and
leadership ability are the eligible to apply for the Licensed Practical Nursing
exam administered through BOCES. If the CNA passes the exam they will be
enrolled into the next scheduled class. Iroquois will absorb the cost of tuition
and materials in exchange for 2 years of satisfactory service.
The CNA/student will be expected to work a minimum number of hours per week in
addition to their full time school work. Grant’s may be available for qualified
students for additional expenses that may occur while the CNA attends the LPN
program. Grants will be awarded on an individual basis depending on need.
The new LPN is expected to complete one year of satisfactory service before they
will be eligible to apply for the LPN to RN scholarship program. LPN’s eligible
will possess excellent work habits, strong leadership abilities, and positive
and compassionate personality.
Iroquois will absorb the cost of tuition, books and fees associated with the LPN
to RN program in exchange for 3 years of satisfactory service. The LPN will be
expected to work a minimum number of hours in addition to their full time school
work. Grants may again be available for qualified individuals for additional
expenses that occur while attending this program.
